Liberty SCA Kiss the Pig Event

Recently, the SCA officers and representatives at Liberty Middle School, with oversight from their advisors, Rhonda Booth and Christian Edwards, worked to organize a “Kiss the Pig” fundraiser. Using spare change as a “vote,” the community service project allowed LMS students to “vote” for their favorite teacher(s) they wanted to see “Kiss the Pig.” Once the “winners” were chosen, “Petunia” the pig and her owner visited with the students so that the teachers could meet and kiss Petunia. Petunia enjoyed all the attention, and the students enjoyed meeting Petunia! In total, the event raised $198.70 which was donated to the Hanover Humane Society. The Hanover Humane Society, located at 12190 Washington Highway in Ashland is a recognized IRS non-profit 501 ( c) 3 entity. Its mission is to support animal welfare through its adoption, education, and prevention...

In Loving Memory of Carolyn Simpkins

Sadly, Carolyn Simpkins, Hanover Humane’s valued and loved volunteer, passed away on 10.17.13. Carolyn loved the cats and kittens in Hanover Humane’s Adoptions Program, and, for over eight years, she could always be found volunteering in the Petsmart at Virginia Center or in Mechanicsville. Despite her busy work schedule, Carolyn always found time to help out in the Adoption Center and would spend hours socializing the animals, cleaning the Center and linens, and handling volunteer tasks in the Center. She always had a smile and kind work for everyone, and, even when her illness progressed, she still maintained a personal interest in the animals, always checking to see how they were. On behalf of the Board of Directors and the other volunteers with Hanover Humane, we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Carolyn’s family for their loss. To honor Carolyn’s memory and commemorate her long-time volunteer efforts, Hanover Humane has ordered an engraved Memorial Leaf which will be placed on its Honor Tree. Everyone that volunteered with Carolyn loved her a great deal, and we will all miss her...

Chip visits Hanover Academy

During the visit, the children heard “Chip’s” story of how he entered Hanover Humane’s adoption program and how he and his siblings ultimately found a forever home. In addition, the children learned about how Hanover Humane Society was found and what its volunteers do to help homeless animals. In appreciation for the visit, the children organized a supply drive for the animals and presented “Chip” with the items.
