Hanover Humane Society Dog Training Courses

“Teaching leadership and building relationships one trained owner at a time."

At Hanover Humane, we offer a wide variety of training options, including traditional classroom instruction, one-on-one sessions, and specialized behavioral training.

Our trainers are Jenn DeGarmo and Kristy Jones.  Both Jenn and Kristy have been trainers for several years and came to us with glowing recommendations.   Jenn is our classroom instructor and also handles one-on-one instruction as needed for her students.  Kristy works with dogs that may not perform well with other dogs, using an individualized behavioral training program that is customized for each dog.

Classroom Training

Traditional classroom instruction is recommended whenever possible.  The social benefit of working with a group of other dogs and owners is invaluable, not to mention the fun to be had and friendships to be made when we get together each week!

We offer Puppy, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced (CGC Prep) training courses. Classes meet for one hour and 15 minutes on Wednesday or Thursday evenings, once per week.    Puppy and Beginner courses are six weeks long, while Intermediate and Advanced courses are eight weeks long.

Puppy Training Course:

Hanover Humane's Puppy course is for dogs that are 10 weeks to 6 months old.  Basic obedience and socialization skills will be taught along with discussions and demonstrations on how to eliminate those frustrating puppy behaviors.  Puppies will learn to sit, stay, come when called, walk on a leash, and more.  Plus, students will learn how to work with their nipping, jumping, barking ball of doggie energy in a positive, fun manner that will lead to a more settled, focused, and very happy canine companion!

Beginner Training Course:

Hanoer Humane's Beginner course is for dogs that are 6 months and older that have had no previous formal training.  This class will focus on basic obedience and socialization skills including sit, down, stay, come when called, walking on a leash, leave-it, drop-it and more.  Students will also learn positive reinforcement techniques to help eliminate destructive behaviors and unwanted bad habits.  Even dogs with years of “bad behavior” under their collar will have a great time learning a new way of life in our engaging training classes!

Location and Class Size:

Classes are  held in our newly renovated training facility at 12190 Washington Highway in Ashland.  Plenty of parking is available!

Each class is held with 4 to 6 participants.  Our smaller classes allow the trainer to spend more time with the participants and have more hands-on with each dog, while still giving plenty of opportunity for socialization.

Families are encouraged to attend together.   Even young children can enjoy learning the proper way to train their four-footed best friend!  Multi-dog families are allowed, as long as there is at least one adult handler per dog.

Cost:

$100 per dog;  a 10% discount is allowed for families that adopted the dog from Hanover Humane.

As our classes are in demand and we want to be assured of having full classes, we ask that you pre-pay to reserve your slot.     We offer various payment options (Paypal on this site, Visa/Mastercard/Discover, etc.)    The trainer will discuss payment collection with you at the time the class particulars are finalized.

Behavioral Training Options

In addition to classroom instruction, Hanover Humane also offers one-on-one training both at our facility and in the home.  This training is flexible and can range from basic obedience to highly specialized behavioral work.   Our trainers work with a variety of issues from separation anxiety, to aggressive behavior with other animals and people.    Prices for training sessions will vary based on the behavioral issues which need to be addressed.

Hanover Humane also offers private refresher lessons, for owners and dogs that have already been through training and would like to brush up on their skills.

Please contact Hanover Humane at 798-8248 for more information on private training.
