SNIP (Spay/Neuter is Progress) PDF Print E-mail
SNIP is currently taking appointments for reduced-cost sterilizations.*   All scheduling is handled by our volunteer SNIP coordinator. To obtain an appointment, two options are available:
  1. Email: For the quickest response, please send an email to the following email address: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  2. Phone: Leave a voice mail at (804) 798-0806 (in the SNIP mailbox).  If leaving a voice mail, please allow up to 3 business days for our volunteer SNIP coordinator to return your return call. Please speak slowly and clearly, leaving your name, complete phone number (including area  code), and a brief message to allow for easy transcription.
Currently, the cost for each surgery is $87.  As surgical appointments are very much in demand, we do ask that you prepay for each surgery to reserve a surgical date.    For your convenience, we now accept payments using PayPal.  (Please see the icons to the left of this panel.)    Additional payment questions may be handled at the time the SNIP coordinator contacts you to discuss a surgical date.

* Please be aware that certain restrictions may apply for surgical candidates based on the animal's age, size, medical conditions, etc.  In some instances,  we may not be able to offer our surgical services to some animals based on these circumstances.

Microchipping:

Hanover Humane now offers microchipping for animals being sterilized through its SNIP program using the Petwatch 24 product.  The cost for each microchip is $25 which includes registration of the microchip. Microchipping your pet is a great way to define ownership and ensure that you can be reunited with your pet should it become lost.   To obtain more information, please ask the SNIP coordinator or send an email inquiry to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. PLEASE NOTE:   For safety purposes, animals slated for surgery should not be fed after midnight.

RABIES DOCUMENTATION:

Please note that, as required by Virginia Animal Control Law, each dog or cat must be current on its rabies vaccine. A copy of the valid rabies certificate must be tendered at the time your pet is dropped off at our facility for surgery.   Without this documentation, we'll be unable to transport your animal for surgery.

Please note that we can't accept copies of county licenses and metal rabies tags in lieu of the actual rabies certificate.

Clients in need of a rabies vaccine for their animal may obtain one at Hanover Humane's Wellness Clinic or by visiting their regular vet.

Drop-Off:

On the day of surgery, clients may drop-off their pets with all completed documentation including a copy of a valid rabies certificate at Hanover Humane's facility between 8:00a and 8:45a.   Hanover Humane's facility is located at 12190 Washington Highway in Ashland.

Cats/Kittens: For safety purposes, please note that cats/kittens must be in a molded plastic carrier (one animal per  carrier) when they arrive at the facility for intake.   Client carriers will be labeled, and each animal will be transported to and from surgery in its carrier.  For safety reasons, our volunteers will not be in a position to handle cats/kittens should they not arrive in a molded plastic carrier.

Dogs/Puppies: For safety reasons, dogs (and puppies) arriving on the day of surgery must be restrained with a leash and collar (or held in the owner's arms).

Distemper Vaccine (Dogs and Cats): As outlined on the SNIP Medical Treatment Form, distemper vaccines are not required for surgery.  However, it is recommended that your pet be current on its distemper vaccine series before coming to the Hanover Humane Society for sterilization.    Clients in need of a distemper vaccine may obtain one at Hanover Humane's Wellness Cinic or by visiting their regular vet.

Bordetella Vaccine (Dogs): As outlined on the SNIP Medical Treatment Form, bordetella vaccines are not required for surgery.  However, it is recommended that your pet be vaccinated for bordetella, commonly known as kennel cough, before coming to the Hanover Humane Society for sterilization.   Clients in need of a bordetella vaccine may obtain one at Hanover Humane's Wellness Clinic or by visiting their regular vet.

Intake Forms: In addition to having a copy of the valid rabies documentation, two additional surgical forms will need to be completed, signed, and tendered at the time your pet is dropped-off for surgery.   Click on the link below to obtain electronic copies of these forms as well as post-operative instruction.

Pick-Up:

On the day of surgery, clients may pick-up their pets at Hanover Humane's facility between 4:30p and 5:30p.

Post-Operative Instructions:

Owners should refer to the Post-Operative Instructions available by download with the other SNIP Administrative Forms (Medical Treatment Form and Veterinary Disclosure Form) on this site.  Upon request, a copy of these Post-Operative Instructions may also be obtained by clients the morning of surgery.

Please note that your animal will not have any sutures which need to be removed after surgery.  However, should your dog/cat experience irritation with the incision or if the incision becomes irritated, you'll need to visit your regular veterinarian.

Post-Operative Complications: As outlined in the SNIP Post-Operative Instructions, should your pet require veterinary attention or experience complications  after surgery, please visit your local veterinarian.
